Westwood Holdings Group Incorporated (WHG) is an asset management firm serving institutional investors, private wealth clients, and financial intermediaries. It was founded in 1983 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas.

The company operates in two segments, Advisory and Trust. The Advisory segment provides investment advisory services to corporate retirement plans, public investment plans, endowments, foundations, and individuals; and investment sub-advisory services to mutual funds and pooled investment vehicles. The Trust segment offers trust and custodial services to institutions and high net-worth individuals.

Stock Fundamentals

Small companies tend to be less efficiently priced. WHG is a very good example of this phenomenon. Not only is WHG an excellent company, but it is, in our opinion, obviously an excellent company. Its outstanding features are plain; and yet this company is selling at a low price, probably because it is small and easily overlooked.

WHG has exhibited strong and steady growth. It has been consistently and legitimately profitable. And it sports low debt and other liabilities. On top of all this, it is modestly price.

Our primary concern with WHG is that it is a purely service company. It has no brick and mortar, no established brands, no catalog of movies or assets of any kind. Its greatest asset is the pool of talented people that work for it. And this pool is small and can change at any time.

This is a facet of risk that even the best investors cannot forecast, determine, or even realistically quantify. It is this reason why smart investors put many stocks in a portfolio and do not own many firms that are exactly like WHG in this regard.
